The Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS) will support the UN Global Compact Action Platform for Sustainable Ocean Business to accelerate progress on ocean health and governance.
The UN Global Compact’s Sustainable Ocean Business Action Platform convenes leading actors from business, academia, and government institutions to determine how ocean industries can advance progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. The work of the platform also builds upon the ten principles of the UN Global Compact, which outline business responsibilities in the areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption.
With regards to sustainable seafood, both initiatives seek to promote ocean governance and transparency across the ocean industries to accelerate progress on issues such as IUU fishing and sustainable sourcing of seafood.
“By supporting the work of this Action Platform of the UN Global Compact, we intend to accelerate global efforts for enhanced governance of fisheries and aquaculture,” says Martin Exel, Managing Director of SeaBOS. “For this to happen, we need a broad alignment for Goal 14 Life below water, between industry, regulators, the UN system and civil society. We are looking forward to work with the UN Global Compact on these issues”.
Common goals of the initiatives include:
- Strengthening science-based ocean governance across the maritime industries
- Developing global guidelines and sharing best practice for aquaculture and fisheries management
- Eliminating Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing by engaging in concerted efforts to strengthen regulations and governance
- Stepping up practices for transparency and traceability of global seafood production
SeaBOS shares the UN Global Compact’s ambitions to develop ocean specific solutions to the Sustainable Development Goals and to strengthen the governance frameworks enabling a sustainable blue economy.
